My name is Joseph, and I live in Wilmington, Delaware, USA. I have had a keen interest in insects almost all of my life.

Small colony of Giant Madagascar Hissing Roaches (Gromphadorhina portentosa).

I now have the following and enjoy them much:

--Panchlora nivea (Green Banana Roaches)
The Panchlora nivea are pretty secretive, yet pretty nevertheless.

--Pseudocreobotra ocellata (Spiny Flower Mantis)
Alas, the last adults died recently. They were fun and worth growing out if you haven't tried.

Learning about the native insect species in Delaware. There are some very cool Dolichopodidae in my garden.

Organic flower gardening (Japanese morning glories and other Ipomoea species, Salvia, Scrophulariaceae), seed saving and exchange, violin and fiddle music.

Hi, thanks for the friend invite and welcome to Insect Geeks! Let me know if you need any hissers, I have a population explosion in my colony! LOL

Joseph

Funny that you would ask that cause im still devestated over the loss of my family and are left with one. She is very lonely. I let her play with the deathheads but they are frisky and she hides from them. I have tryed to get more from the person who killed them but they dont care. I would really appreceate more members!

Thanks for adding me! Yeah, I like that pic, too. It was created by a couple of our SFBATS members and is used as our logo. Its pretty cool! Have a super week!

So, not bug related but... know how I told you I took that trellis I built down because the morning glories didn't grow?  I kid you not, within a week of doing that they all decided to sprout.  Argh.  They are all getting pretty huge but no blooms, yet.

no they dont nibble other roaches coz when it becomes dry they cant really nibble it coz its hard and smell-less. It last until u remove it.

Hi

I used to have a couple pet mantids. Wonderful predators.

Matt,

Does the ootheca change colour before hatching? Part of the oldest egg case has recently gotten lighter in colour. The others have not changed hue so far.

Joseph

I'm unsure of whether ootheca changes colour before hatching, but oothecae usually darken over time.

I would be happy to share photos. I am not certain but don't think management would like me posting them here since they are not 6 or 8 legged LOL. I can send them to an alternate email address if you'd like. LMK ok?

Do you chip the MG seed coat before sowing the seeds? You have to do that or you will get erratic seed germination.

Joseph

Cool!  I'm PM you w/ an email addy.

I did nick the seeds before I planted them.  I even did the soaking overnight thing, too.  Was that too much?    Should I have done one or the other?

I planted a bunch and, like I said, only one took.  One morning when I went out to the garden some of the soiled looked dug through... rooted up, so I dunno if I can rule out animal interference but I wouldn't be surprised if it was really just human error, haha.
