D'oh! I swear, I'm the only person I know who accidentally ends up with Baboon tarantulas. This should tell me that I really need to study my species more, but to be honest with the deals I've gotten on both of my baboons, I doubt it would have changed my mind. And, to my credit, I did realize they weren't what they were supposed to be, I just didn't realize what they actually were (rofl). At any rate, here's the story.
A few days ago, I bought a curly haired tarantula at a local exotics store; it was 50% off since it wasn't selling, and I just happened to have some empty enclosures. Well, while I was there, they tried to warm me up to the idea of buying a "zebra knee tarantula" (A. seemani), which I couldn't see of course since it was under the bedding. I told them I'd read up on the species and get back to them. Well, I did my reading and decided I definately wanted it, so I headed back today to pick up my new T.
When they uncovered it, however, it was really obvious that it wasn't a seemani. I didn't know what it was, but last time I checked, seemanis had um... striped legs. They weren't little gray fuzzballz with huge hind legs and an even bigger attitude. The guy warned me that this one was aggressive, and I shrugged it off and bought it anyways. The origional asking price was $40 (
), but for some reason it rang up as $20, then it was an additional 50% off... aaaand I had a coupon for $4. So, I got this awesome little T for just $6!
Anyways, I got home, snapped some pics, posted on arachnoboards and... I have a Stout Leg Baboon! Another aggressive old world buddy for me, eh? And better still, it's a female, which means it'll be nice and long lived - and it's not even full grown yet so I can happily look at a good lifespan. Yay for long lived cranky spiders!
Here's Gacey, my new little lady. Whatcha think, purdy huh?
