I had been waiting to do this for a really long time because everyone I asked gave me a different opinion on what a Platymeris biguttata bite is meant to be like. I figured I might as well do everyone a favour and find out because my self preservation instinct isn't ... isn't there at all!
I have been getting bitten and stung by stuff for fun since I could walk but for some reason these little guys made me nervous. Pain is one thing, but the little thread is a whooooole other story. I mean with jaws, or stingers you can see what's going on, right? Or at least you know the mechanics of it, not so much with these little things, well, I kind of know what's going on but it seems so alien. Anyway I WAS nervous, and blabbered a lot while I was taping it, had a few false starts where it refused to bite and so on.
Well the bite was quite unremarkable. I WAS making quite a bit of noise but if you watch the video (which I'll post later) it wasn't exactly from pain.
It was painful, but I was expecting much much more, it felt much like a bee sting, sharp and intense. I was expecting to almost pass out from pain but I think I was thinking of wheel bugs.
I pulled the assassin off my hand, with some resistance, it kind of was plucked off. Hope I didn't break it! :p There was immediately a white lump on my thumb, which became a red lump with a white ring. Then the bite point started turning a very deep red very fast and almost purple, when squeezed blood came out. My thumb swelled up quite a bit, and it is still a little swolen today. About 10 minutes after the bite the swelling was at it's worst and there was very little pain, mostly warmth and tingling. Now there is no pain, allthough my thumb is a little tender and no itching either, well see if it comes up but if it's taken this long I wonder if it even will. I'll keep y'all posted with the healing process.
So what can I say? It wasn't what I was hoping for, but at the same time it was pretty fun. I wouldn't go out of my way to get stung by these if I were you, (well no actually I would, but you shouldn't
) but it's not anything to be nervous around!
So yeah... that's pretty much it
Enjoy!
